Tempe Rotary Clubs seeking Student Nominees for Rotary River Rally Foundation Scholarship Awards

Teachers, youth group leaders, involved citizens: If you know a student who goes above and beyond in their service to others, please take a moment to nominate this student to win one of the cash awards offered each year through the Rotary River Rally Foundation.

The “Service Above Self” Award was established in 2006 to honor the late Pat and Chip Rollins – both dedicated volunteers who spent endless hours making a difference. In 2007, another award has been added in the memory of Jim Herte, who unexpectedly passed away in December 2006. Not only was Jim a dedicated Rotarian, he was one of the founders of the Rotary River Rally and instrumental in helping to grow this event into an important fund-raiser for children’s charities in Tempe.

Although the lives of these exemplary Rotarians were tragically cut short, their legacy of service to youth lives on. The “Service Above Self” award stresses the youth's service to their community, their youth organization, their country or school and a humanitarian or educational cause helping others. Nominations can be submitted by adult leaders and teachers. Nominated students must be in grade 6 through 12, and attend school in the East Valley (Tempe, Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Phoenix, Gilbert, Chandler or Mesa). Nominations will need to specify why the nominee has gone above and beyond.

Nominees will be asked for the following information:

Personal Resume including significant community service activities, school related service activities, extracurricular activities, honors and / or other school recognition, offices held in clubs, schools and other organizations.
One page Essay about the concept of Service Above Self and how the youth has applied this understanding to their volunteer community service activities.

Letter of recommendation from nominating teacher or youth leader
The winners will be selected by a panel of community leaders and the awards will be presented at the annual Rotary River Rally picnic to be held at Tempe Beach Park on Friday April 20th.

Nominations and student resume / essay must be received by April 15th for consideration.
